“Eunoia”… Today’s word.

I discovered a new word last night, “Eunoia”, there is still a debate about its pronunciation. some say it is yoo-noy-ah while others think it should be eh-yu-no-ya with the stress on the first syllable.

eunoiaeunoia1

Whatever the case may be, I prefer the first pronunciation though. But much more than the pronunciation what got to me was the meaning- beautiful thinking or well mind.

What is beautiful thinking? and how is it different from every other thinking? These were the questions that came to mind as I pondered on this thought, and just as I write I am reminded of a bible verse. Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thought that I think towards you, declares the Lord, thoughts of good and not evil to bring you to an expected end.

That right there is a beautiful thought from our Heavenly Father towards us His children. A beautiful thought is therefore devoid of any form of harm or evil. Taking it further, a beautiful thinking which begets a beautiful action is a thinking that participates in bringing renewal or newness into something broken or that which is decaying.

A beautiful thinking is a thought pattern which celebrates the goodness, beauty, truth in others as well as in the society at large, it is not a thinking that denies the existence of evil or harm, but seeks to elevate God’s goodness above all manner of ills.

A beautiful thought will always proceed from a well mind. That’s why Paul in his many letters and epistles wrote to the Philippian Church, Philippian4:8

Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report…meditate on these things.

In other words, Paul has given them eye-opener to a world of beautiful thinking, he was telling them as he is still telling us today, that the only way to live above the menace and decay that seem to surround and almost seem to engulf the world is to always meditate on beautiful thoughts.

Is it possible to think beautiful thoughts regularly? The answer is Yes! we have to be intentional about it and trust God through the Holy Spirit to flood our hearts with the beauty, sensational goodness of God that encompasses us daily…even in the face of contrary circumstances.
